From 61% to 57%: What Voter Turnout Tells Us About Jammu and Kashmir!

The final voting round for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections is now underway, covering 40 constituencies across seven districts, including the winter capital, Jammu.

There are 415 candidates for the over 3.9 million eligible voters to pick from, including well-known individuals like Muzaffar Baig and Tara Chand, two former deputy chief ministers.

In 16 assembly constituencies in north Kashmir, where there is strict security, voting got underway at 7 AM. The constituencies include major areas like Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora.

In the meantime, voting is taking place in 24 Jammu and Kashmir assembly constituencies today.

The Election Commission has set up 5,060 polling places with webcasting to provide a seamless voting process. Polling places designated especially for women, the disabled, and those close to the Line of Control are examples of special projects. This election is important because it’s the first time that communities like the Gorkha people and West Pakistani immigrants will cast ballots in assembly elections since Article 370 was repealed in 2019.

With 61.38% of voters participating in the first round of voting and 57.31% in the second, the election has shown a strong level of interest among voters, and everyone is excitedly anticipating the results on October 8!
