CJI D.Y. Chandrachud Clarifies: No Judicial Discussions During Modi’s Ganesh Puja Visit

Images of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Prime Minister Narendra Modi praying to Lord Ganesha went viral online, sparking debate on the judiciary’s separation from the government.

Chandrachud addressed the skepticism about his impartiality, asserting in a Times of India interview that the backlash was both “unnecessary and illogical.”
He underlined that judicial independence is well-protected and that meetings between judges and political leaders usually take place during social events.
These meetings, according to Chandrachud, are never about judicial concerns; rather, they are about things like the need for improved court infrastructure.
He gave his word that judges are dedicated to upholding the democratic system’s separation of powers and that they never discuss court matters with political authorities.
